Rules of the Club Ladder

  1. The ladder system will be used to determine board placing in the teams representing the club in the annual WP league matches.
  2. The number of games played in the ladder for a particular year will determine the number of games a player is entitled to in the WP league matches.
  3. Games which are eligible for submission to the ladder system:
    1. Games played at any club event (provided the time-control is a minimum of 60/60)
    2. Games played at any recognized WP or CHESSA event (provided the time control is a minimum of 60/60)
    3. Private games played by 2 club players at any venue (provided that the time control is a minimum of 60/60). A limit is placed on the number of private games which can be submitted. For any 2 games played under condition 3a, a player is eligible to submit one condition 3c game.
  4. The ratings in the ladder system will be based on the ELO system:
    1. A player joining the ladder will get an initial ladder rating based on the discretion of the captain of play.
  5. Pairings in the ladder system:
    1. A player can challenge any other player in the ladder for a game. This game only becomes a commitment if:
                                                               i.      The challenged player is not more than 6 positions above the challenger in the ladder.
ii.      The challenged player accepts the challenge before or on the Thursday of the week preceding the game date.
iii.      The Captain of play is informed by both parties that the challenge is accepted.
    1. Any player that has not informed the Captain of Play of a confirmed challenge before or on the Thursday preceding the club evening, will automatically be paired against another player by the Captain of Play. This list of challenges will be emailed to all players on the Friday preceding the game date.
    2. A challenged player may only refuse a challenge on the following grounds:
                                                               i.      The challenger is more than 6 positions below him on the ladder system.
ii.      The challenged player has already committed to another challenge.
iii.      The challenged player cannot be at the venue on the date in question.
iv.      If the two players have played each other in the last 6 encounters.
    1. Once a player has turned down a challenge for any reason other than those stipulated in section 5c, the player cannot accepts or initiate any new challenges for the date on which the turned-down challenge would have taken place.
    2. Any player who, after accepting a challenge, cannot play a game on the agreed date, must give at least 24 hours notice of his/her intention not to do so to both the opponent and the Captain of Play. Failure to do this will result in the opponent being awarded the ladder points. Only under exceptional circumstances will this rule be relaxed.
    3. In case of a player not being able to play a game on the agreed date, he/she can negotiate with his opponent to play the game on a convenient date within three weeks of the original game date. The Captain of Play must also be informed of this arrangement for it to become effective.
    4. After defaulting two consecutive games without informing the opponent and the Captain of Play, a player will be withdrawn from the ladder. He/she will then have to apply to be re-admitted to the ladder.
    5. Both players must inform the Captain of Play of the results after completing a game before the next club meeting.  Results handed in later will be recorded but may not be rated.
